I see my role in my many communities – local, national, global, academic, scientific – as that of a gadfly. The dictionary defines “gadfly” not only as a biting insect but also a persistent critic. My mentor George Gerbner, a leading scholar of mass communication, dedicated much of his life to studying, evaluating, and improving the cultural environment for communication. Many years ago, I promised George that once I

earned my Ph.D. I intended to be an agitator for social change. Though George has passed away, he still inspires me, and I intend to fulfill my promise.
